The ACC Baseball Championship isn’t short on talent or intrigue, but heading into Day Two of the tournament, the spotlight is beginning to focus on a select few players poised to shape its outcome. On the latest segment of ACC Central, co-hosts Micah and Nick each made their picks for who might steal the show, with Micah backing Birge for another breakout, and Nick banking on Clemson’s Cam Cannarella to erupt against Virginia Tech.
If Nick’s prediction proves true, Cannarella could do more than just fuel a Clemson win—he could remind everyone why he entered the season as one of the most complete players in college baseball.
The ACC Central co-hosts and Kaileigh picked their X-Factors for Day Two as Micah expects another big day from Birge and Nick thinks Cam will go off against the Hokies.

Cannarella, a junior center fielder and two-time All-ACC selection, has had an unorthodox path to this moment. A .363 career hitter and Golden Spikes Award candidate, he has been forced to adapt his game after undergoing labrum surgery last summer.
Once a high-average, high-speed catalyst, the injury restricted his baserunning and suppressed his offensive ceiling early in the season. But even as his numbers dipped, Cannarella never stopped influencing games.
“I know what I bring to the table,” Cannarella said. “Even if I’m not hitting bombs, I can help us win with defense, leadership, and energy.”
That defense is what separates him from the rest of the X-Factor pool. Three opposing ACC coaches have called Cannarella the best outfielder they’ve seen in a decade—some going further. Last spring’s jaw-dropping over-the-shoulder catch against Florida became an instant highlight-reel staple, drawing comparisons to Willie Mays and praise from even rival coaches.
“He makes plays nobody else can,” Clemson pitcher and roommate Ethan Darden said. “If it’s hit anywhere near him, it’s caught.”
And now, with Clemson pushing for a deep run, Cannarella looks ready to add a new chapter to his resume.
Though he’s batting a more modest .300 this season, the metrics don’t tell the full story. Clemson head coach Erik Bakich has watched him grow in ways that won’t show up in a box score.
“He’s fiery, he’s composed, he’s elite defensively, and he’s still developing,” Bakich said. “Cam makes winning plays. Period.”
That’s exactly the type of player who can tilt a tournament.
So as the ACC Central crew debates which X-Factor will shine brightest, don’t be surprised if Cannarella’s glove—and maybe even his bat—end up being the difference.
Because if he gets going, Clemson might not just win Wednesday—they might go all the way.
