Cardinals All-Star RHP Alex Reyes to have season-ending shoulder surgery

The 2022 season may be over for St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Alex Reyes before it began. According to Katie Woo of The Athletic, Reyes is scheduled to have shoulder surgery later this month and will likely miss the remainder of the year.

Reyes, 27, hasn't pitched this season after he was placed on the 60-day injured list in March due to shoulder soreness.

After making his MLB debut in 2016, Reyes missed the entire 2017 season after he underwent Tommy John surgery in the offseason. He missed the majority of the 2018 season as well due to surgery to repair a torn tendon in his lat muscle.

Reyes finally rebounded with a full, healthy season in 2021 and earned All-Star honors after beginning the year 20 for 20 on save opportunities as the Cardinals' closer. He struggled later in the season, though, and it ended with Reyes giving up a two-run, walk-off home run against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL Wild Card Game.

The Cardinals have relied on Giovanny Gallegos as the team's closer so far during the 2022 season and he's recorded eight saves with two blown leads.
