In the midst of a four-game set with their NL Central rival, the St. Louis Cardinals have added a new piece to their roster.

Veteran utility player Garrett Hampson has been claimed off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds the  club announced on Tuesday. To make room for Hampson - who will wear No. 13 - the Cardinals designated infielder-outfielder José Barrero for assignment.

Hampson played in 27 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Reds this season, registering a slash line of .167/.359/.167. Despite his low offensive output, Hampson is known for his defense, having played five different positions this year alone, without making an error.

During his eight-year career, Hampson has played every defensive position except catcher.

The 30-year-old made his MLB debut in 2018 with the Colorado Rockies, and spent five seasons with the organization before signing with the Miami Marlins as a free agent in December 2022. Hampson came highly recommended by the Cardinals' Jon Jay and Brant Brown, who coached him in Miami, according to MLB.com Cardinals beat writer John Denton

Cardinals manager Oli Marmol also informed Denton that Hampson was "a value add." In addition to his defensive abilities, Hampson also brings a little speed on the base paths with him to St. Louis. He's stolen 66 bases in his career, while only being caught 16 times.

The Cardinals also made another move Tuesday, optioning pitcher Roddery Muñoz to Triple-A Memphis to make room for starter Michel McGreevy.

McGreevy will be on the mound Tuesday night when the Cardinals take on the. Cubs. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. CT.
