St. Louis Cardinals right-handed pitcher Carlos Martinez earned the win Saturday against the Colorado Rockies. However, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Martinez admitted after that game he injured his right ankle celebrating when pitcher Jack Flaherty hit his first career home run the previous night.
On Tuesday, the Cardinals confirmed they've placed Martinez on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Sunday. In a corresponding roster move, St. Louis recalled righty Johan Oviedo from its Triple-A affiliate in Memphis.
"I didn't want to get out of this game," Martinez told reporters after Saturday's victory. "I knew I got hurt, but I felt comfortable in my mind I could be in the game. I was competing all game."
Martinez has made seven starts this season and holds a record of 3-4 with a 4.35 ERA. Oviedo, meanwhile, has made two starts and three appearances with the big-league club this spring. He's 0-1 with a 4.61 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 13 strikeouts across 13.2 innings of work.
St. Louis sits atop the National League Central standings at 21-14 and visits the Milwaukee Brewers (19-16) on Tuesday.
