On the evening of May 5, 2025, the St. Louis Cardinals — but more specifically, the tandem of catcher Pedro Pagés and starting pitcher Miles Mikolas — accomplished something no other team has done since April of 2024.

While facing the NL Central rival Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night, Mikolas allowed opposing shortstop Oneil Cruz to reach first base in the third inning after a hit by pitch.

That's when the increasingly rare feat occurred.

"Oneil Cruz is caught stealing for the first time since April 22nd ... OF LAST YEAR ," the MLB X account announced on social media, sharing a clip of Pagés gunning the speedy Pirates star down at second base.

In the video clip, the broadcaster also notes that Cruz had successfully stolen 34 straight attempts.

As of May 5, Cruz leads the National League in stolen bases in 2025 with 14. When you take into account the American League, however, Cruz is second to Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr.

As for Pagés, the 26-year-old catcher received his first major league opportunity with the Cardinals in 2024. The organization originally drafted him in the sixth round of the 2019 MLB June Amateur Draft.

Pagés actually struggled to throw runners out as a rookie, with 61 stolen bases allowed compared to just 14 caught stealings. A caught stealing percentage of 18.7%.

Those defensive numbers have improved dramatically in 2025, however, as Pagés has already thrown out 6 baserunners compared to just 13 steals against (31.6%).

Among qualifying catchers, Pagés' caught stealing percentage ranks fifth in the MLB according to ESPN. The Cardinals backstop currently contributes a positive defensive WAR of +0.1.

St. Louis did end up winning the Monday night matchup with Pittsburgh by a final score of 6-3, with the help of Mikolas and Pagés. The latter also went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring a run, while Mikolas pitched 5.0 innings of 3-run ball, earning a no-decision.
