The St. Louis Cardinals and manager Oliver Marmol agreed to a two-year extension on Sunday morning. The extension runs through the 2028 season, with a club option in 2029. It may come as a surprise to some to see this decision. However, the Cardinals’ decision to give Marmol an extension is the correct move going forward.
The Cardinals’ giving Marmol this extension is a coordinated move. With the team going into a rebuilding phase, it’s wise to show a willingness to be consistent. Consistency is something that the Cardinals have lacked in the last few seasons. Whether it’s play on the field or mindset from the front office, the Cards want to get back to being a force in the National League. Having Marmol set to be at the helm of the team for the next two years (at least) shows they are willing to stick to their direction. Marmol has the energy and the passion to lead the next wave of Cardinals players. Whether it’s prospects like JJ Wetherholt or the young wave of catching talent, Marmol has shown the willingness to help the young players in this organization grow.
It’s no secret that the Cardinals have struggled in the last few seasons. Many fans attribute that to Marmol’s inability to manage the team. After taking over in 2022, Marmol has a record of 325-323. It is a winning percentage slightly above .500, but the Cardinals have only finished with a record above .500 in two of their four seasons under Marmol. The team also hasn’t won a postseason game since he took over. But as far as knowing the organization, Marmol knows the ins and outs of the Cardinals franchise. He has been with the organization since 2007, when he was drafted as a player. Since that time, Marmol has spent time as a Minor League manager (2012-2016), a Major League Bench coach (2017-2021), and a Major League manager (2022-present). Marmol is the organization’s 51st manager and also signed a previous extension back in March of 2024.
The Marmol extension will definitely lead to some fan frustration. From an outsider’s perspective, the frustration would appear to be caused by a lack of success, which is a big factor. However, inside Cardinals’ fan circles, the frustration comes from a previous move made this offseason in the front office.
Former catcher and future Hall of Famer Yadier Molina was added to the Cardinals’ front office staff. Many believed that Yadi would be the next manager of the team and take the reins on the rebuild once Marmol’s contract was up after this season. Molina has expressed an interest in coaching at the Major League level and even spent time in the Cardinals’ dugout with Marmol last season. Many saw that as a “passing of the torch” moment from Marmol to Molina. Some also believed that former Cardinal Albert Pujols would be the next manager of the team. But as of right now, Marmol’s extension shows he will be the one leading the Cardinals in their next chapter.
