Cardinals Get Worst Possible News On Alex Reyes

On Monday, the St. Louis Cardinals got some really bad news ahead of their brief two-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Alex Reyes, who had been an All-Star for the team in 2021 before struggling in the second half, is going to need surgery on his shoulder, which will most likely keep him out for the remainder of the 2022 season.

The surgery is set for the end of May, when Reyes was initially expected to return and give the Cards’ bullpen a boost.

Instead, Reyes’ season is more than likely over.

The 27-year-old fireballer went 10-8 with a 3.24 ERA in 69 games last season.

Reyes Likely Done For Season

This is some absolutely brutal news for the Cardinals, who have already been without Jack Flaherty and now are also preparing for Steven Matz to be out for some time.

Reyes was an All-Star in 2021 after a dominant first half, but began to struggle in the second half and lost the closer’s job to Giovanny Gallegos.

The injuries are now piling up for the Cardinals.

Dylan Carlson is also going to miss some time as a result of a hamstring injury.

But Reyes was a key member of St. Louis’ bullpen last year, even after losing the closer’s job.

He helped settle things down when the entire pitching staff was in shambles due to various injuries.

Losing him for the entire season is a huge blow for the Cardinals.

It’s very possible that they could find themselves in the market for some bullpen help at the trade deadline.

In the meantime, they’ll continue to trust Ryan Helsley, Genesis Cabrera, and Gallegos with the higher leverage situations late in games.
