The St. Louis Cardinals have made a significant roster move, designating starting pitcher Erick Fedde for assignment.

This decision comes nearly a year after they acquired him as part of an eight-player trade with the Chicago White Sox, which also involved the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Fedde's recent performance has been less than stellar, highlighted by a rough outing against the Rockies on Tuesday where he surrendered six runs in an 8-4 defeat. It marked yet another setback for a player who hasn't secured a win since May 9. Over the course of the season, he posted a 3-10 record with a 5.20 ERA in 20 appearances, having allowed 26 earned runs in 17 2/3 innings.

Fedde did enjoy a career-best 2024 season prior to joining the Cardinals, where he recorded a 3.30 ERA across 31 starts and 177 and 1/3 innings with both the White Sox and Cardinals.

Looking ahead, Fedde is expected to join another team, as he is poised to become a free agent at season's end. The Cardinals have a week to make decisions regarding his future, whether that involves trading him, placing him on waivers, releasing him, or sending him to the minors.

He is still owed the remaining $7.5 million on his contract for this season.
