Cardinals’ Sonny Gray stunned by Brewers tactic in embarrassing loss

Sonny Gray got the start on the rubber for the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday against the Milwaukee Brewers, and it didn’t go so well. Gray lasted five innings and he gave up seven hits and six earned runs. The Brewers launched three home runs off of Gray, and they ended up winning the game 7-1.

After the rough start, Sonny Gray felt like a big reason why he wasn’t successful was because of the Brewers jumping on his early fast balls. He wasn’t able to get to his off-speed stuff, and that made things difficult on him.

“They swung early at my fastball and didn’t miss,” Gray said after the game, according to an article from ESPN. “That doesn’t happen a ton. It happened tonight.”

The Cardinals couldn’t keep up on offense as they were only able to muster up the one run on a home run in the third inning.

“Offensively, there just hasn’t been any consistency,” Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said. “We’ve got to figure out a way around that.”

That was a tough one for the Cardinals, but that happens. Baseball is a game of failures, and there are going to be games where nothing goes your way. There are 162 games in a season, it’s bound to happen sometimes.

On the other side, the Brewers have to be thrilled about their performance on Thursday. Nothing went right for the Cardinals, but everything was working for Milwaukee. Brewers manager Pat Murphy was very pleased with how his team fared against Sonny Gray.

“I thought we had the best approach we’ve ever had (against Gray), and I’ve seen him pitch against us many times,” Pat Murphy said after the game.

Rhys Hoskins was one of the three players for the Brewers that hit a home run off of Gray. His came in the first inning and it was a two-run shot to put Milwaukee up 3-0. Like Gray, he noticed that his team was able to take advantage of the fast ball.

“I don’t know exactly what the numbers are off the top of my head about damage pitches he throws, but I’m going to guess they’re not breaking balls, just because of how well he can spin the ball,” Rhys Hoskins said. “We got some heaters that caught a lot of the plate. We didn’t get a lot of those the last time we faced him in St. Louis.”

The Brewers and the Cardinals are going to be seeing a lot more of each other this weekend as that was the first of a four-game series. St. Louis is currently in last place in the NL Central, and Milwaukee is in first. The Cardinals are currently seven games back of the Brewers, and these next three games present a big opportunity to stay in the division race early in the season. If the Brewers have a big series, then St. Louis will really be falling behind.

Game two of the series will get going at 8:10 ET on Friday night. Game three will be another evening game, and the series will conclude on Sunday in a day game.
