Cardinals Victor Scott II Continues Rare Power Surge

St. Louis Cardinals center fielder Victor Scott II's recent surge of power continued on Sunday against the Minnesota Twins, as the 24-year-old barreled a three-run home run into the Cardinal bullpen for his first of the season.

The 396-foot home run would have left the yard in all 30 MLB stadiums, jumping off the bat at 100.1 mph, according to Statcast

Following Saturday's win over Minnesota, the 24-year old referred to himself as a "hit collector" to reporters, saying that he - as well as the rest of the team - have been working on a new approach at the plate under new hitting coach Brant Brown.

Scott ended spring tied with Luken Baker for the team lead in home runs with four in 16 games.

Following Sunday's blast, Cardinals' fans and writers took to 'X' to offer reactions, noting their surprise as Scott has not historically been known as a power hitter.

"And you thought Victor Scott II was here for the small ball," The Athletic's Katie Woo wrote

"Victor Scott II is pimping home runs now?? The same Victor Scott II who stole 94 bases two years ago?? Here we go lol." another user commented

Prior to this season, Scott had just 19 professional home runs in 297 games. The former fifth-round pick hit two in his first pro season with Low-A Palm Beach, nine in 2023 with High-A Peoria and Double-A Springfield and eight last season between Triple-A Memphis and St. Louis.

Scott has typically been most notable for his speed on the bases, totaling 137 stolen bases in 244 minor league games - 94 of which came in the 2023 season.

If the young center fielder's power surge continues, though, it may be time to consider whether or not Scott has unlocked a new tool to add to his belt.

The team has already been reaping the benefits of having Scott in the lineup regularly, as the Atlanta, Georgia native came up big Saturday, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and a run scored.

Scott has performed well on the defensive side of the ball, as well, coming up with a highlight-reel catch on opening day to save a couple runs and keep the Cardinals in the lead.

If Scott continues to produce at the level he has so far this season, he'll be a mainstay in the Cardinals lineup for the rest of the season.
