Gibson has struggled in his 12th season. Through 25 starts, the right-hander possesses a 4.54 ERA and 1.38 WHIP.
His underlying metrics are even worse. Gibson sports a 5.04 xERA and ranks in the 39th percentile or lower in xBA, strikeout rate, walk rate, barrel rate and hard-hit rate.
These woes are likely to continue against New York, a team he is 2-7 against through 12 career meetings with a fade-worthy 5.94 ERA. The good news for Gibson is that he is likely to receive some support from the bats.
Entering this matchup, St. Louis ranks in the top half of the league in hits per game, BA and OBP.
The Cardinals' success at the dish is likely to continue against Warren, who has had a terrible start to his career thus far. Through the first four outings of his debut campaign, the right-hander is 0-2 with a troubling 9.68 ERA and 1.81 WHIP.
Following Warren is a bullpen that is unlikely to bail him out. This season, the Yankees' relief staff ranks in the bottom half of the league in both FIP and xFIP.
With that said, run support is unlikely to be an issue for this pitching staff. New York ranks in the top 10 in runs scored per game, BA, OBP, SLG, OPS and home runs.
Through 90 combined career plate appearances against Gibson, this current Yankees lineup boasts a .241 xBA, .428 xSLG and .322 xwOBA.
There are multiple reasons to be optimistic on the over in this contest. Both starting pitchers rank in the bottom half of the league in xERA, xBA, barrel rate and hard-hit rate.
Meanwhile, both lineups contribute in different ways. The Cardinals are a contact-heavy team, ranking in the top half of the league in hits per game, BA and OBP.
On the other hand, the Yankees thrive on their power and rank in the top two in runs scored per game, SLG, OPS and home runs.
Pick: Over 9 (-122 / Play to -130)
I'm going to pass on the moneyline. I have no interest in laying -166 on New York, and I have no interest in backing St. Louis.
I'm also going to pass on the run line. I like the Yankees at -1.5, but I would like to see a larger payout than the current +114 tag.
I'm betting Over 9 in this game.
