Cardinals Wish Willie McGee A Happy Birthday

Yesterday, the St. Louis Cardinals paid homage to one of their franchise legends and current coaches.

Cardinals Hall-of-Famer Willie McGee turned 64 years old yesterday.

McGee played the vast majority of his Major League career with the Cardinals.

He was a part of the Cards’ 1982 World Series championship team and also played key roles in their runs back to the Fall Classic in 1985 and 1987.

McGee currently serves as an assistant coach under manager Oliver Marmol.

On Twitter, the Cardinals posted a picture of McGee in the dugout during a game and wished one of their all-time greats a Happy 64th birthday.

Happy Birthday, Willie McGee!

McGee made his debut in 1982 and played 18 years in Major League Baseball.

During that time, he posted a 34.2 WAR, a career batting average of .295, and a grand total of 2,254 hits.

He also was an MVP, a four-time All-Star, a Silver Slugger, a three-time Gold Glove Award winner, and a two-time Batting Champion.

McGee was traded to the Oakland Athletics in 1990 when the Cardinals found themselves well out of postseason contention.

He then spent four years with the San Francisco Giants and one with the Boston Red Sox before returning to St. Louis for the final four years of his career.

McGee was inducted into the Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2014.

Unfortunately, McGee is not in the Baseball Hall of Fame, but his career numbers provide a strong case for him to be inducted some time in the future.

McGee is adored by Cardinals fans and players alike and is one of the most iconic figures in franchise history.
