The 2026 MLB season is still in its early stages. With that being said, sample sizes for many players are still very small. However, some are surprising the eyes of fans and others around the league with their hot starts to the season. Perhaps one of the hottest hitters in baseball right now is a 2020 first-round pick made by the St. Louis Cardinals. After four seasons of being sent back and forth to Triple-A, injuries, and on-field struggles, is Jordan Walker finally a breakout candidate in 2026?

Jordan Walker Could Be In for a Career Breakout

The Prince That Was Promised

After being drafted in the first round in 2020, Walker had as much hype as a prospect could get. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound corner infielder/outfielder out of Decatur, Georgia, was strongly compared to former National League MVP Kris Bryant. Walker made the Cardinals’ Opening Day roster back in 2023 and debuted against the Toronto Blue Jays. He came out of the gates hot in 2023, setting a Cardinals’ rookie record for a hitting streak to start the season (12 games). He continued to have some success throughout the 23-season, but his stat line began to decline quickly in the seasons after that. Now, the stats are skyrocketing early, and Walker is on pace to have a breakout season in 2026. In what looked to be a “boom or bust” season for Walker, he’s trending toward the former so far.

Offense

The biggest part of Walker’s potential breakout season is his performance offensively. After Tuesday night’s game against the Washington Nationals, Walker has a .300 average, four homers, and 11 RBI. He is also compiling a .364 OBP and a 1.014 OPS. He is also leading the team in five of the most important offensive categories. Those categories include batting average, home runs, RBI, slugging percentage (.650), and total hits (12). Walker also has one stolen base on the year, which came in the last series against the Detroit Tigers. These are the kinds of numbers that make fantasy baseball managers swoon.

Perhaps the more impressive part of Walker’s hot start is more of what he’s not doing, compared to what he is doing. Walker’s biggest issue was elevating the baseball. His groundball percentage coming into this season was about 49%. However, Walker is now seeing success with elevating the ball, as his GB% is 37% and his LD% is at 21%. Walker’s other issue at the plate was chasing the low and away slider. He is now seeing pitches better as his chase rate is down to 23% from 34% in 2025.

Walker is also putting up career highs in some of the more advanced offensive analytics as well. His average exit velocity as of April 7th is 98 MPH, which is up 7 MPH from his career average (91 MPH). The launch angle in his swing, which is causing him to elevate the ball, is around the 12-degree mark compared to his 10-degree career average. He is barreling up pitches at 17%, to where his career average is at 9%. And lastly, his hard-hit percentage is at 75% compared to his career 46%.

Defense

Walker’s breakout isn’t just on the offensive side of the ball, but defensively as well. In 83 innings played, Walker has 20 putouts, two outfield assists, and a fielding percentage of 1.000. It may not seem like much, but to say that Cardinals fans were worried about Walker in right field is an understatement. It’s not that he made a bunch of errors, as he has a career fielding percentage of .980. It was more that he never made a play look easy. Now, Walker seems to be fully comfortable in the right field spot. He is getting great reads on fly balls and hasn’t been shy to show off the arm either. Perhaps his best throw also came against the Tigers last weekend when he gunned out Javier Báez at the plate with a 100.6 mph throw.

Projections

If Walker can keep up this pace, it’s not a question that 2026 will be a breakout season. Now, everyone knows the game of baseball is a game of ups and downs. So in reality, Walker keeping this pace is unlikely. However, if he were to, Walker is currently on pace for 59 home runs and 144 RBI. Obviously, those numbers will be difficult to achieve, but if he comes within half of those amounts, the Cardinals will know Walker has finally made that adjustment. Before the season, Walker was projected at 17 homers and 64 RBI by FanGraphs. If he can continue this success throughout the season, Jordan Walker will finally have that career breakout in 2026 that so many people have been waiting for.
