Championship skippers continue clash as Rangers face Reds
Kevin Jairaj-Imagn Images

Cincinnati's Terry Francona and Texas' Bruce Bochy continue their managerial rivalry Tuesday in the second game of a three-game set as the Reds host the Rangers.

The two veteran skippers have a combined six World Series titles. The last time two managers faced off in a regular-season series with six or more titles came in 2010 when Joe Torre and his four titles squared off against Francona's Boston Red Sox.

It also happened that season when Torre's New York Yankees faced off against Tony La Russa's St. Louis Cardinals.

Now Francona, who won two championships in Boston, and Bochy, who won three with the San Francisco Giants and another with Texas, will square off.

With a 14-3 Cincinnati win on Monday in the series opener, Bochy's lead in the all-time series is down to 30-28. The two have combined for 20 playoff appearances but have never managed against each other in the postseason.

"He is so much of what's good in our game," Francona said before the Monday game. "I don't need to compare (managerial styles). He's one of a kind."

Bochy (2,174 wins) and Francona (1,952) are the top two active managers in wins, with San Francisco's Bob Melvin a distant third at 1,600.

Francona will hope for more offensive fireworks from Elly De La Cruz on Tuesday. The Cincinnati shortstop switched to the "torpedo" bat for the Monday game, and it resulted in two home runs, a double and a 4-for-5 night with a career-high seven RBIs.

"It felt good, really good," De La Cruz said of the unique taper that allows for more weight closer to the handle of the bat. "I just wanted to know if it felt good, and it did."

De La Cruz spoke to teammate and former New York Yankees catcher Jose Trevino about the bat and decided to try it in a game after using it in batting practice. The Yankees are the team getting the most attention for their use of torpedo bats.

Bochy and Rangers will send ace Nathan Eovaldi (0-0, 3.00 ERA) to the mound looking to even the series. The right-hander threw six innings in the season opener on Thursday against the Boston Red Sox, allowing two runs on three hits, striking out nine and walking none in a no-decision.

Eovaldi is 1-0 with a 1.67 ERA in four career starts against Cincinnati.

The Reds will counter with right-hander Carson Spiers, making his 2025 season debut. Spiers was 5-7 with a 5.46 ERA in 22 appearances (10 starts) over three stints with Cincinnati last season.

Spiers, who went 1-1 with a 2.57 ERA in four spring training appearances with the Reds, will be making his first career start against Texas.

Before arriving in Cincinnati, the Rangers won three of their first four games at home, despite scoring just 13 runs in the series against the Red Sox. With the Monday loss to the Reds, the Rangers have scored four runs or fewer in all five games. While the offense struggled, the back end of the bullpen was a bright spot in the opening series, then wasn't needed on Monday.

On Sunday, Luke Jackson earned his second save in three days, striking out Alex Bregman with runners on first and second to end a 3-2 win. Jackson bounced back from taking the loss in the opener.

"I thought he stepped into that closer role really well," Texas catcher Kyle Higashioka said. "I mean, obviously a rough first night, but the last couple appearances have been really, really good, so probably the hardest role in baseball for a reliever, and he's stepping up big time for us."

Ranking the top three 2025 AL Cy Young Award candidates

Last season, Detroit Tigers’ ace Tarik Skubal won the AL Cy Young Award resoundingly, nabbing a rare pitching triple crown. This year, the contest is a little tighter. Now, into the home stretch of the 2025 MLB season, there are three AL Cy Young contenders that stand above the rest, each pitching for a team well within the postseason picture. As things stand today, it seems the Cy Young race could come down to a matter of splitting hairs, but with almost two months of baseball left to play, there is still time for a shakeup. Will the reigning Cy Young prevail or give way to one of the up-and-coming rising stars? This is how the AL Cy Young race is currently shaping up in the top three. LHP Garrett Crochet, Boston Red Sox In his first year with the Boston Red Sox, Crochet has gone from high-potential strikeout artist to Cy Young front-runner. It was just last season when the rising southpaw posted a 3.58 ERA with 209 strikeouts in 146 innings, making 32 starts with the White Sox, though he had never started a major-league game before. Now, after a quick change of Sox, Crochet has become one of the most dominant starters in baseball. He currently owns a 2.24 ERA with 183 strikeouts, an opponent batting average of .218 and 13 wins in 148.2 innings. Entering Saturday, his ERA leads the AL (second in MLB) while his innings count and wins total (tie) lead the MLB. LHP Tarik Skubal, Detroit Tigers Skubal, last year’s AL Cy Young and triple crown winner, lags Crochet this time around, but not by much. The Tigers’ ace owns a 2.35 ERA with 187 strikeouts, an opponent batting average of .198 and 11 wins in 145.1 innings. His strikeout total, walks per nine rate (1.30) and K/BB rate (8.90) lead the MLB, while his strikeouts per nine rate (11.58) leads the AL. His 3 losses on the season are tied with Christopher Sanchez for the least among all qualified starters. It’s fair to note that the Cy Young award doesn’t always go to the pitcher with the lowest ERA giving Skubal an outside shot if the voting started today, but the totals in the wins column and innings pitched still favor Crochet. Nonetheless, there is plenty of time left to pull ahead. RHP Hunter Brown, Houston Astros Rounding out the top three is Brown, the Houston Astros’ breakout ace. Brown settled into the majors last season, throwing to a 3.49 ERA after struggling through his rookie year. Now, Brown is one of the game’s top arms, maintaining an ERA of 2.51 with 160 strikeouts, an opponent batting average of .195 and nine wins in 136.1 innings, earning his first All-Star nod. Off the bat, the only thing that makes him stand out from the other two aces is his .195 opponent batting average, which may not be the lowest in the game, but is still lower than both Crochet’s and Skubal’s. Brown is more of a longshot for the AL Cy Young Award; however, he isn’t out of the race yet. It seems implausible, but a stellar performance this month and next could push him to the top.

Celtics Seeking Another Blockbuster Trade on $100 Million Scorer

The Celtics need not be in a hurry to get further under the NBA's luxury tax threshold, now that they've successfully navigated the dreaded second apron, unloading stars Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis in trades and letting the likes of Luke Kornet and, likely soon, Al Horford walk in free agency. Still, Boston is looking to create as much flexibility as possible this season, with star forward Jayson Tatum out for the year with an Achilles tendon tear and the roster generally depleted all around, as the Celtics begin paying the cost for the contracts team honcho Brad Stevens handed out as they were winning the 2024 NBA championship. That means the chief prize the Celtics got back in making the trade that sent Holiday to the Blazers--Anfernee Simons, the 26-year-old scorer who is in the final year of a four-year, $100 million contract--is still available on the trade market, according to league insider Jake Fischer. Celtics Salary Dumps Continue The Celtics did make one salary-dump trade this week, sending Georges Niang to Utah. Niang was owed $8.2 million for the 2025-26 season, and is now the Jazz's problem. He was sent to Boston in the Porzingis trade. Writes Fischer on The Stein Line substack on Sunday: "The Celtics discussed trading Niang with various teams around the league, sources say, in their continued salary-shaving campaign following the luxury-tax-slashing trades that shipped out Jrue Holiday and Porzingis. "The expectation persists, furthermore, that Boston will continue to invite trade discussion involving Anfernee Simons from now through next season's trade deadline on Feb. 5 at 3 PM ET." Simons averaged 19.3 points per game last season in Portland, and was down somewhat on his 3-point shooting, at 36.3%. Still, he should bounce back, as he is a 38.1% career 3-point shooter, and if he returns to form, his market value will only get that much stronger ahead of the NBA trade deadline.

Standout performances from Week 1 of NFL preseason: Rookie, backup QBs shine

The first week of the 2025 NFL preseason is officially in the books. Even though the games and results do not matter, there is still reason to pay attention to standout performances from around the league. Here are some of the best from this week's games. TreVeyon Henderson, RB, New England Patriots The Patriots need some game-changers on offense, and they may have found one in second-round pick TreVeyon Henderson. Henderson put on an immediate show in the Patriots' preseason opener, returning the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, rushing for 18 yards on his only carry and catching three passes. Skylar Thompson, QB, Pittsburgh Steelers Thompson is not likely to make the Steelers roster, but that doesn't mean he can't find a spot on another team. Especially if he puts together a strong preseason performance. He did exactly that on Saturday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars, completing 20-of-28 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns. With Aaron Rodgers unlikely to play in the preseason and Will Howard injured, Thompson should get plenty of reps to audition for other teams. Tanner McKee, QB, Philadelphia Eagles Following the offseason trade of Kenny Pickett, McKee is now pretty much cemented in as the Eagles' backup, and he had to give them a lot of confidence in his ability following his preseason performance against the Bengals. McKee torched the Bengals defense to the tune of 20-of-25 passing for 252 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. It is a nice continuation for McKee following his promising debut a year ago when he threw for 323 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions in his two appearances. Blake Corum, RB, Los Angeles Rams The Rams already have a starting running back in Kyren Williams, but there is nothing wrong with having a second productive player at the position. Corum didn't make the expected impact in his rookie season, but he had a promising preseason debut this year with two touchdowns in the first quarter against the Dallas Cowboys. Rookie quarterbacks Cleveland's Shedeur Sanders got the week off to a promising start by throwing two touchdowns against Carolina, taking a big step forward in his quest to win the team's starting quarterback job and to silence the critics following his slide in the draft. Jaxson Dart, one of the Giants' first-round picks, also had a strong showing by going 12-of-19 with 154 yards and a very impressive touchdown pass. Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward, the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, also had a strong debut by leading a touchdown drive and developing an instant connection with veteran wide receiver Calvin Ridley. Abdul Carter, DE, New York Giants Carter did not play a ton of snaps for the Giants, but he was a force when he did play. He recorded a quarterback pressure on all three of his pass-rush snaps and showed the type of quickness and speed that made him one of the best players in the 2025 NFL Draft class. Cam Little, K, Jacksonville Jaguars Look, when you kick a 70-yard field goal, you deserve to get some added recognition, whether it counts as an official league record or not. Little made all four field goal attempts, as well as an extra point, in the Jaguars' preseason debut.

Cowboys exec has blunt message about Micah Parsons' trade request

The Dallas Cowboys have not been able to come to an agreement with Micah Parsons on a long-term contract extension, but that does not mean the team has any plans to shop the star pass-rusher in trade talks. Parsons, who is making just over $24M in the final year of his rookie contract this season, publicly requested a trade from the Cowboys on Aug. 1. There have now been questions about whether he will report to work before Week 1. While Parsons has refused to practice in training camp, he traveled to Los Angeles with the Cowboys for their preseason game against the Rams on Saturday night. Before kickoff, Dallas executive vice president Stephen Jones said he was pleased with Parsons' decision to join the team. Jones also said the Cowboys "have no intention of trading Micah." It is a positive sign for the Cowboys that Parsons chose to be on the sideline for Saturday's exhibition game. The 26-year-old has also been with his teammates at training camp, though he has not been practicing. From a contractual standpoint, Parsons has very little leverage. He would have to forfeit game checks if he were to skip regular-season games, and his contract would eventually toll and carry over into 2026 if he were to sit out long enough. The Cowboys also still have the franchise tag available to use on Parsons in both 2026 and 2027. All Parsons can do is create a headache for the Cowboys, which has been a successful strategy for many players in the past. For what it's worth, a different Dallas star who had a contract standoff with the team last year believes the situation will eventually be resolved. Jones and his father, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, have made it clear that they will not entertain trade offers at this time. Parsons had 12 sacks in 13 games last season, so there is no question the team is better with him on the field. He has 52.5 sacks in 63 career games and is arguably the best pass-rusher in the NFL when healthy.
