Chase Burns strikes out side vs. Yankees in MLB debut

Something special is in the air Tuesday night at Great American Ballpark. Chase Burns is making his debut for the Cincinnati Reds, going up against the New York Yankees. The arrival of Burns is an anticipated one, being one of the top prospects in baseball.

Taking the mound for the first time against the top of the Yankees’ order is nothing easy. Well, Burns certainly proved that to be false. Three up, three down for the former Tennessee and Wake Forest star. All fell victim to the strikeout as well.

Aaron Judge ended the inning, swinging on a 1-2 slider at 91 miles per hour. This comes after Burns was hitting 100 mph on his fastball at times. You can check out all three strikeouts from Burns here, getting Trent Grisham, Ben Rice, and Judge to all swing-and-miss.

***UPDATE*** – Turns out, Burns was just getting the party started. He came back out for the top half of the second inning and continued the strikeout party. The first two Yankees went down, meaning Burns struck out the first five batters he faced. Jazz Chisholm broke things up with a single to right, getting New York’s first base runner of the night. However, Burns got right back to it by getting Anthony Volpe on strikes.

Reds fans certainly could get used to seeing this from Burns. The team is looking to make a playoff push, entering the day 5.5 games back of the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central. As for the Wild Card, Cincinnati is 2.0 games back of a couple divisional foes, the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers.

News of Cincinnati calling up Burns broke late Saturday night. It’s always a big series when the Yankees are in town and getting a top prospect on the mound only generated more excitement.

Burns is considered one of the top prospects in all of baseball and ranks No. 11 overall. Within the Reds organization, he holds the No. 1 spot. It’s an organization with some great young players but Burns certainly tops the list of guys people in Cincinnati are excited for.

This season has seen Burns at three different levels throughout the minor leagues. He began the year at A+ Dayton before working his way to a promotion to AA Chattanooga. Burns’ final stop before this reported Reds call-up in AAA Louisville.
