There might not be a team in Major League Baseball that has had worse luck with injuries to their starting pitchers than the Chicago Cubs. Already in 2026, Cade Horton has been ruled out for the rest of the season, and Justin Steele will pitch out of the bullpen if he even gets healthy enough towards the end of the year.
In addition to these two, multiple other starting pitchers have been forced to spend one or more stints on the injured list with any variety of ailments. Fortunately, Chicago has been able to weather these and sit only 5.5 games back of first place in the National League Central Division.
That being said, if they are to make up some ground in the second half, they need a healthy starting rotation.
One of the pitchers that has been dealing with injury is Jameson Taillon. He is currently on the 15-day injured list with a hamstring strain. Fortunately, he is about to make his next rehab start and will bre returning to the starting rotation soon:
Some Cubs pitching notes, per Craig Counsell today:
-Jameson Taillon scheduled for rehab with Triple-A on Sunday
-Javier Assad will make another start before All-Star Break
-Bryse Wilson expected to serve in long relief role

As one can see from the post above, Chicago has also made some decisions on two of their current healthy pitchers. Javier Assad, who has had an up-and-down year, will make one more start before the All-Star Break. Newly acquired pitcher Bryse Wilson will serve in a long relief role.
Taillon has not had the best season in 2026 when healthy. He is currently just 2-5 with a 5.19 ERA in 13 starts. Once he returns, the Cubs obviously hope he can get back to 2024 and 2025 form when he had sub-4.00 ERA’s.
