The Chicago Cubs are making roster moves before their series against the Miami Marlins starting Monday at 5:40 p.m. CST. The Cubs are traveling to Miami after winning five of their last six games, including a weekend sweep of the Chicago White Sox.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Sunday that the Cubs would consider calling up third baseman Matt Shaw before the series against Miami. Chicago sent the promising rookie to Iowa in April after batting .172/.294/.241 with an OPS of .535 in his first 58 at-bats.
Per Jon Heyman of MLB Network, Shaw is joining the Cubs in Miami on Monday. Chicago will try to trade Nicky Lopez.
“Cubs top prospect Matt Shaw is indeed coming up to the Cubs, as I just mentioned on @mullyhaugh,” Heyman posted on X. “Shaw killed it in Iowa and rounds out terrific lineup. Cubs will try to trade defensive specialist Nicky Lopez, who didn’t travel with the team to Miami.”
