Chicago Cubs Decline Option on Drew Smyly

After the news of Cody Bellinger  exercising his player option, the Chicago Cubs made the decision to decline their end of Drew Smyly's $10 million option for the 2025 season. This news should come as no surprise given that the team originally placed him on waivers in August.

The veteran pitcher will now look to catch on with another team this offseason as he enters the free-agent market.

In 50 appearances, Smyly's 3.84 ERA was decent but ultimately not worthy of having his option picked up at such a steep price for a reliever. The Cubs are better equipped to use those funds in other areas.

With the emergence of pitchers like Porter Hodge and Tyson Miller , there is little doubt that Jed Hoyer won't be able to find quality arms at a quality price.

As Smyly departs, there isn't a bigger moment in his Cubs' tenure than nearly throwing a perfect game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The way that things went down was rather unfortunate for the veteran.

The Cubs certainly have their work cut out for them this offseason. Offensive power and top-end starting pitching should be at the top of their wish list. Unfortunately for Smyly, he falls into neither of those categories.

It will be interesting to see what the team does with players like Kyle Hendricks and now Smyly off the books. Whatever it is, it can't be the same old song and dance of the last couple of seasons.
