The Cubs fell 3-0 at Texas. Jacob deGrom dominated the lineup and struck out 10 batters. This achievement brought him to 1,900 strikeouts for his career. Jameson Taillon delivered a quality start, throwing 90 pitches over 5.1 innings. He allowed 1 earned run, 4 hits, 4 strikeouts, and 2 walks. The bullpen saw scoreless relief from Hoby Milner and Phil Maton. Then, Daniel Palencia allowed a late home run. The game turned in the 4th inning. A contested tag play at home was upheld by review. This gave Texas a lead. Evan Carter extended that lead with a two-run blast in the 8th.
Nico Hoerner provided the lone offensive spark for Chicago. He finished 2-for-4 with a double. Hoerner also achieved his eighth stolen base of the season. He was the only Cubs player with an extra-base hit in the afternoon. Hoerner managed to reach base twice against deGrom. Despite Hoerner’s effort at the top of the lineup, the rest of the Cubs’ hitters struggled significantly. The 2-3-4 spots went a combined 0-for-9. They had eight strikeouts.
Following a Monday off-day, the Cubs travel to Atlanta for a three-game series beginning Tuesday night. Colin Rea (4-1, 4.03 ERA) is the scheduled starter for the series opener against the Braves.
