Chicago Cubs Star Powering Team To Strong 2024 Start

With his ninth home run on Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs Third Baseman Christopher Morel continues to move up the National League home run leaderboard. Only the Atlanta Braves Marcell Ozuna(12), and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ duo of Shohei Ohtani(11) and Teoscar Hernandez(11) have more home runs in the National League this season than Morel. He is hitting .228 this season with nine home runs and 27 RBI. Morel’s 27 RBI are also top 20 in the league.

Chicago needed 10 innings but defeated the Pirates 5-4 to take two of three games on the road against the Pirates.

The third baseman finds himself in great company tied in home runs this season with superstars like the Philadelphia Phillies Bryce Harper, the Cleveland Guardians Jose Ramirez, and Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies. The Cubs have been playing better baseball as of late winning five of their last eight games.

Morel made his Major League debut with the Chicago Cubs in 2022. The best season of his career came in 2023 when he hit 26 home runs and drove in 70 runs. Morel is a career .238 hitter with 51 home runs and 144 RBI.

The Cubs(24-17) are only half a game back of the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the National League Central. Chicago has one of the better offenses in the league as they have scored the 10th-most runs in the league, are top 10 home runs, and have drawn the third-most walks in Major League Baseball.

In addition to a strong offense, the Chicago Cubs have an above-average pitching staff. The Cubs are 12th in ERA, and are in the top half of the league in home runs surrendered, and opponents batting average. The pitching staff of the Chicago Cubs is led by rookie sensation Shota Imanaga. Imanaga is 5-1 this season with a league-leading 1.08 ERA. He also is third in the league with a WHIP of 0.82.

Cubs Upcoming Schedule

The Chicago Cubs have a rough stretch of games upcoming with six of their next 10 games coming against one of the best teams in the league, the Atlanta Braves. Sandwiched between their games with the Braves is a four-game series at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Both Morel and the Cubs have gotten off to a strong start in 2024, but they both must keep it going for this year’s team to reach their full potential.
