Chicago Cubs' Star Tandem Does Something Not Seen in Over 100 Years

It's officially July, and the Chicago Cubs enter the month in good shape. They finished June with a 49-35 record and a two-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central.

The Cubs' offense has played a big part in their success this year, ranking second in MLB behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in runs per game (5.39). That's a considerable uptick from last year, when Chicago ranked 12th in scoring at 4.54 runs per game.

The offseason addition of Kyle Tucker and the emergence of Pete Crow-Armstrong have given the Cubs' lineup a major boost this season. Crow-Armstrong leads the NL in WAR (4.4) and has already exceeded 20 homers and stolen bases, while Tucker leads Chicago in OPS (.931) and has arguably been the team's best hitter all season.

With their elite power and speed, they've been a historically good duo this season. According to OptaSTATS, they're the first pair of teammates since 1922 to enter July with at least 30 extra-base hits and 20 stolen bases.

Tucker hasn't skipped a beat in his first season with the Cubs after being traded from the Houston Astros. He's putting together an outstanding contract year, slashing .291/.395/.537 with 17 homers, 18 doubles, 52 RBI, 4.1 WAR and 20 steals in 21 attempts.

Meanwhile, Crow-Armstrong is putting it all together in his third season, maturing at the plate after previously flashing his impressive leather and speed. The 23-year-old is batting .262/.299/.537 with 21 homers, 20 doubles and 25 steals in 29 tries, breaking out with an MVP-caliber season for Chicago.

Both outfielders have a shot at a 40/40 season if they stay healthy, which would make them the first pair of teammates to top both 40 homers and 40 steals in the same year. There's never been a 40/40 player for the Cubs before, but one of them could be the first.
