Chicago White Sox Claim Former Top Prospect Off Waivers From New York Yankees
USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago White Sox, continuing the roster churn of their rebuild, have claimed former top prospect Deivi Garcia off waivers from the New York Yankees.

The team traded off veterans Reynaldo Lopez, Joe Kelly, Jake Burger, Lucas Giolito and Keynan Middleton at the trade deadline and now has open roster spots to play with in the organization. Closer Liam Hendriks is also out for the rest of the season with Tommy John surgery.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

The White Sox claimed Garcia off waivers from the Yankees on Thursday, Erik Boland of Newsday reports.

ANALYSIS
Garcia didn't figure to make it through waivers once the Yankees designated him for assignment and, sure enough, he gets scooped up by one of the higher waiver priorities. The 24-year-old has seen his star fade since he was a top-100 prospect, but he's a worthwhile reclamation project. Garcia has options left and presumably will report to Triple-A Charlotte for now.

He's certainly still young enough to turn it around, and no better place than in the White Sox organization, where the team has the ability to afford patience with young players.

Chicago enters play on Thursday at 47-69 this season but they ironically just took two-of-three from the Yankees this week.

They'll open up a new series on Friday with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Garcia has appeared in 10 big league games in his career, making eight starts. He's 3-4 with a 4.84 ERA over 48.1 innings.

In 137 career minor league games, he's 27-34. He's made 93 starts and has an MILB ERA of 4.68.
