Cincinnati Reds Lose Ace

Opening Day is closing in. The Cincinnati Reds just got word that they will be without one of their top arms from their rotation. This will last for a good chunk of the season. Cincinnati Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall just announced some important news. Hunter Greene will undergo arthroscopic surgery on Wednesday. The surgery aims to remove bone chips in his right elbow. Greene’s timeline as of right now is between 14 and 16 weeks before returning to a mound. If all goes well, that puts Greene back sometime in July.

Greene has thrown one inning of work this spring for the Cincinnati Reds. In that outing, he gave up five hits, four earned runs, and one walk, without recording a strikeout. Greene missed time last season as well with a right groin strain. He made 19 starts last season and had a 7-4 record with a 2.76 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP. Greene threw 107.2 innings, striking out 132 batters last season.

Conclusion

The Reds finished third in the NL Central last season behind the Milwaukee Brewers and the Chicago Cubs. They made the playoffs, but were swept by the Dodgers in the Wild Card round. This season, they were looking to improve on last year’s marks and challenge for the Central Division title. Rhett Lowder seems to be the next man up. At the very least, he will have the first opportunity to fill Greene’s shoes during his absence. Hopefully, Hunter Greene can get back and have a positive impact on the season when healthy.
