Clarke Schmidt News Forces Yankees to Explore Deadline Pitching Help

There’s no magic fix on the roster. Ryan Yarbrough is on the injured list with an oblique strain. Carlos Carrasco was brutal. Allan Winans just got sent down after another rough patch. The only internal answer that even registers as intriguing is Cam Schlittler, recently promoted to Triple-A. Boone praised him earlier this week, and with the Yankees out of options, he might get a look.

Luis Gil is expected back in August. That at least gives them hope, but it does not help right now. The Yankees need innings, and they need them soon.

That’s why the trade market is now front and center. Here are a few arms to watch:

• Sandy Alcantara (Marlins): He’s not the same pitcher who won the Cy Young in 2022, but the velocity’s still there and he’s getting there. He will cost a big-name prospect. Edward Cabrera is another Marlin option. Still just 26 with years of team control. He’s inconsistent but has mid-rotation stuff and fits their window. He will also cost a top prospect.
• Seth Lugo (Royals): A more stable option. Lugo’s having a strong year and comes with a player option. He’d give the Yankees a proven, playoff-tested arm. He’s also done it in New York with the Mets.
• Mitch Keller (Pirates): Under contract through 2028. If Pittsburgh sells, he’ll draw interest across the league. Stuff plays, and he’s durable.

Schmidt’s injury doesn’t just hurt the Yankees, it forces their hand They can patch the rotation for now, but if this team plans to be standing in October, they’ll need more than hope. They’ll need a move.
