Clayton Kershaw and Dodgers Sign Extension for 2024 Season
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Following news he’s signed a new deal, Clayton Kershaw is set to return to the Los Angeles Dodgers for his 17th season. He has a physical scheduled for Thursday. Kershaw, an iconic figure in Dodgers history, has spent his entire career with the team and is expected to engage with the Dodgers about joining their rotation once he is ready to pitch again.

Despite some speculation about a potential move to the Texas Rangers, Kershaw’s return to the Dodgers is seen as a fitting scenario for the veteran pitcher. The physical timing aligns well with the opening of spring training camp, where players can be placed on the 60-day Injured List starting Thursday.

While there had been discussions about Kershaw’s future and the idea of him possibly joining the Rangers, the prevailing sentiment is that returning to the Dodgers is the ideal outcome. The Dodgers, who could use Kershaw’s innings in the second half of the season, see the veteran as a valuable asset. And, on a completely loaded team, some may view this as the equivalent of the Dodgers making a trade halfway through next season with Kershaw hopefully making an impact down the stretch.

Kershaw Didn’t Want to Finish His Run With the Dodgers on a Down Note

Kershaw’s last postseason appearance was in the National League Division Series (NLDS) last year, and despite some shoulder concerns, he showcased his ability to control the ball and deliver dominant performances. But, he didn’t fare well in the playoffs and it’s hard to imagine that was how he wanted his legacy to be remembered. He wants to be a potential boost to the Dodgers’ rotation.

Kershaw’s loyalty to the Dodgers, combined with his skill on the mound, positions him to play a crucial role in the team’s pursuit of success in the upcoming season.
