Cleveland claims LHP Alex Young off waivers from Diamondbacks

The Cleveland Indians defeated the Tampa Bay Rays Sunday to avoid what would've been a dreadful home four-game sweep less than one full week ahead of Friday's trade deadline but began Monday trailing the first-place Chicago White Sox by nine games in the American League Central standings.

Cleveland has added some pitching help ahead of Tuesday's matchup against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Cleveland confirmed it has claimed left-handed pitcher Alex Young off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Young was optioned to Triple-A Columbus, while right-hander Aaron Civale was transferred from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL.

Per The Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Civale has been sidelined since June 21 with a sprained finger. He's set to complete a fastballs-only bullpen session on Tuesday as he works to recover from the setback.

Young, meanwhile, went 2-6 with a 6.26 ERA while with Arizona this season. The 27-year-old holds a career record of 11-15 with a 4.73 ERA in 62 appearances and 24 starts.

Cleveland is not rumored to make a major acquisition before Friday and could even be a seller later this week.
