The Cleveland Guardians have selected Notre Dame RHP commit Cameron Sullivan in the seventh round of the 2024 MLB Draft. He was taken with the No. 205 overall pick.

Sullivan entered the draft as one of Indiana’s top prospects. He originally committed to the Fighting Irish in October 2022.

This past season playing for Mount Vernon (IN) High School, he finished the season 3-1 across seven appearances. During that stretch, he logged a 0.75 ERA while striking 65 batters. In 37.1 innings pitched, he gave up 23 hits and four earned runs.

During the MLB Draft process, most publications had seen Sullivan ranked anywhere from the 90-120 range in the 2024 draft cycle’s overall prospect list.

One of the biggest improvements Sullivan has showcased over the past year is his strength. He was reportedly committed to improving his heater and after working at 88-92 mph, he operated at 92-95 mph at the WWBA event and at 94-95 while touching 97 this past spring.

“Sullivan’s heater operated at 92-95 mph at the WWBA event and at 94-95 while touching 97 this April, and it features high spin rates that create carry-up in the zone,” his MLB scouting report reads.

“He reaches 2,900 rpm with his slider and has two versions, an upper-80s cutter that tops out at 91 mph and a sweepier 82-85 mph option. His upper-80s changeup peaks at 91 mph with heavy sink and could use more velocity separation from his fastball.”

His MLB scouting report also described him as an “athletic mover who gets down the mound well,” although Sullivan is still learning to locate his pitches. “His fastball command suffers because he falls in love with his slider more than he should.”

It’s unclear whether Sullivan’s draft status will affect his commitment to Notre Dame, however. Some analysts believe it may be beneficial to him to head to South Bend for a couple of years before returning to the MLB Draft cycle. Regardless, the former high school senior is a 2024 MLB draftee.

“For the next step in my career, I’m excited for what it holds,” Sullivan told Baseball Prospect Journal in May. “I want to see improvements in my game, especially getting high-level hitters out consistently. Also, I want to add more weight and become more durable to have that prototypical starting pitcher look. I also want to throw harder and improve my stuff.”
