The Cleveland Guardians take on the Cincinnati Reds in an in-state matchup for the Ohio Cup. Cincinnati is coming off a 7-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox yesterday. Cleveland dropped the series finale to the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday but did take two out of three from the series. The Guardians are trying to keep up with the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central, while the Reds hope to get themselves in a position for a playoff push. Who will take the first game in the Ohio Cup series?

The Cleveland Guardians would be in a world of hurt if not for third baseman Jose Ramirez. Over the past seven games, he is slashing a ridiculous .450/.950/1.492 with three home runs and five RBIs. The next closest batting average over the past seven games is .273, held by Steven Kwan and Kyle Manzardo.
Right-hander Tenner Bibee heads to the mound to take on the Reds. After being tagged by the Baltimore Orioles on April 17, he hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in his last four starts. In his last outing against the Philadelphia Phillies, he went seven innings, giving up one earned run and striking out three batters.
The Cincinnati Reds have been all about power and speed this year. The past seven games have been no different. Over the past seven games, right fielder Will Benson is slashing .357/.714/1.185 with one home run and four RBIs. Star shortstop Elly De La Cruz has hit three home runs over the last seven games, driving in six runs.
The Reds send right-hander Brady Singer to the mound on Friday. After starting out the season strong, Singer has struggled in his past two starts. He gave up seven hits and four earned runs against the Atlanta Braves on May 5th. He followed that up by giving up nine hits and seven earned runs to the Houston Astros six days ago. Because of those outings, his ERA has ballooned to almost 5.00. The Guardians’ lineup is less daunting, so Singer hopes to get back on track.

It’s hard to rely on the Cleveland Guardians’ offense to score. If the Cincinnati Reds can solve Ramirez, there isn’t much punch to the offense. While the Reds’ offense is wildly inconsistent, they do have some pop in the lineup. Singer looked really good over the first month of the season, and I see him getting back on track today. I am still leaning a Cleveland win, but I’ll take the Cincinnati spread.
