Cleveland signs two-time All-Star Wilson Ramos

The Cleveland Indians found themselves with an unplanned off day after Tuesday's matchup at the Tampa Bay Rays was converted to a Wednesday doubleheader because of Tropical Storm Elsa. They took advantage by adding what could be some useful depth for a potential pursuit of a postseason spot.

Cleveland confirmed Tuesday the signing of veteran catcher Wilson Ramos to a minor league agreement. The 33-year-old was assigned to Triple-A Columbus.

Ramos earned All-Star nods in 2016 and 2018, and he won the Silver Slugger Award in 2016. Most recently, he appeared in 35 games with the Detroit Tigers this season but was released last month when he was batting .200 with six home runs and 13 RBIs.

Cleveland is in the middle of a disastrous run that's included seven straight losses to drop the club to 42-40 overall and six games back of the first-place Chicago White Sox in the American League Central standings. It's unclear if Cleveland will be a buyer or a seller ahead of this month's trade deadline.
