Comment from New York Mets GM David Stearns likely confirms former Tennessee Vols outfielder Drew Gilbert's fate for the 2025 season

Former Tennessee Vols outfielder Drew Gilbert has been tearing it up recently for the Syracuse Mets, the New York Mets' Triple-A affiliate.

Gilbert's recent hot streak has had Mets and Vols fans wondering if the 24-year-old centerfielder could be on the verge of a call-up.

After all, the Mets' current centerfield platoon, which includes a slumping Tyrone Taylor and an out-of-position Jeff McNeil, isn't exactly ideal (though it's worth noting that Taylor's defense, despite his slumping bat, has been elite).

Unfortunately for Gilbert, it doesn't sound like a call-up is in the works.

Mets general manager David Stearns said on Monday that it's unlikely that any of New York's position player prospects will help the team this season.

"I think on the position player side, more likely than not it's the grouping that we've seen here," said Stearns. "I think it's the grouping of our veterans and the younger players who we've seen throughout [the season]. Right now, I think it's less likely that we see the position player prospects make an impact (in 2025)."

Baseball is a funny sport. Injuries and poor performance can quickly ruin a general manager's plans. So it's not out of the question that Gilbert could be called up this season, it just sounds like it's very unlikely that he will be.
