The last time the Yankees and Mets went after the same player, the Yankees lost out on Juan Soto.
Could history repeat itself?
According to SNY’s Andy Martino, the Arizona Diamondbacks have been actively scouting both the New York Yankees and New York Mets farm systems in advance of a potential trade involving third baseman Eugenio Suarez. Martino reports that Diamondbacks officials have been watching the Mets’ Double-A affiliate in Binghamton while also being “all over” the Yankees' minor league system.
That level of attention doesn’t guarantee a deal—but it signals that Suarez is firmly on the block. And both New York teams may be circling.
The Yankees have been shopping for a third baseman as the 2025 MLB trade deadline approaches. Suarez, a former All-Star with the Seattle Mariners and Cincinnati Reds, has long been considered a potential fit. According to YES Network’s Jack Curry, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman isn’t thrilled with the current third-base market, but New York's need remains after losing Oswaldo Cabrera and trying (unsuccessfully) to plug in Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Oswald Peraza.
On the other side of town, the Mets have their own third base issues. Brett Baty has been inconsistent, and Joey Wendle has offered little stability. If team president David Stearns chooses to buy, Suarez could give Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso the kind of help they need in the middle of the lineup.
But Suarez may not be the only name in play.
Martino notes that the Diamondbacks also have “pitching to sell.”
Arizona could dangle starters like Zac Gallen or Merrill Kelly. Both would be major additions for a Yankees rotation that has already lost Gerrit Cole, Clarke Schmidt and is still waiting on Luis Gil to return from the injured list.
So maybe it’s not just a battle for a third baseman. Maybe it’s a bigger tug-of-war between two teams that aren’t used to going head-to-head—and one franchise, the Diamondbacks, that could reshape the trade deadline in a hurry.
And if it comes down to Yankees vs. Mets again?
Let’s just say Brian Cashman won’t want another Juan Soto situation on his hands.
