Signed to a minor league deal with an invitation to the New York Mets’ spring training camp in December, no one saw this coming from outfielder Cristian Pache.
The 27-year-old has always been a “glove-first” player throughout his four-year career. However, with the Mets this spring, it’s his offense that is standing out.

And while Pache, barring injuries, won’t make the Opening Day roster, his strong performances have helped him survive a slew of recent cuts from Mets camp. He has slashed an impressive .464/.516/.786 hitting two home runs with a 1.302 OPS in 28 at-bats. Pache is tied with top position prospect Carson Benge for the most hits on the team with 13 this spring.
The right-handed hitter last played in the majors in 2024, spending last season at Triple-A Reno in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, where he slashed .251/.351/.389 with five homers and eight steals in 70 games.
Pache, a former top prospect in the Atlanta Braves organization, ranked as high as No. 12 in all of MLB according to MLB Pipeline before the 2021 season.
For his career, Pache has hit .181 with seven homers and 49 RBI in 251 games. The outfielder has spent stints in the majors with the Atlanta Braves, Oakland Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies, Baltimore Orioles, and Miami Marlins. His best season came in 2023 when he hit 10 extra-base hits and put up a league-average 100 OPS+ in 48 games.
We could see Pache with the Mets at some point during the season, though that will largely depend on the team’s needs.
“He’s an elite defender,” manager Carlos Mendoza said on Monday after the Mets lost to the Washington Nationals 12-6 at Clover Park. “Offensively, we’ve seen him hit the ball hard up the middle and run the bases. There are a lot of tools there. It’s good to see him getting results.”
