Cubs 2023 Draftee Dominating Rookie Season
USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs have been able to build one of the top pipelines in the MLB after becoming sellers at the deadline the past couple seasons. This allowed them to get top prospects from teams across the league.

Many of those players have been called up already or are set to make their MLB debuts later in the season or at some point next season.

One of the top prospects in the Cubs organization was selected in the 2023 draft and has shined in his first season of professional baseball. Chicago spent a first round pick on Matt Shaw who is a shortstop out of Maryland.

He has worked his way into a promotion from the High Single-A level in 20 games to their Double-A affiliate.

MLB.com writes, "One of the top college hitters in the 2023 Draft, Shaw won the Cape Cod League batting title (.360) and MVP award last summer, then set Maryland's career home run record (53) en route to B1G Player of the Year accolades this spring. The 13th overall choice, he combines aggressiveness and discipline at the plate."

In Single-A, he recorded a slash line of .393/.427/.655 with four home runs and 18 RBI. After his promotion to Double-A, he's hitting .286/.348/.548 with two home runs and five RBI in 10 games.

Shaw was a highly touted selection coming out of the draft this year and is ranked as the sixth overall prospect in the Cubs' strong pipeline. He's also the No. 98 prospect in the minor leagues according to MLB.com.

With the impact that many of Chicago's young players have had when called up to the major league level, Shaw is another one of the exciting prospects to monitor throughout his minor league career.
