The Chicago Cubs continue to deal with injury concerns. Matthew Boyd recently suffered an injury, joining a number of pitchers who are currently out due to the injuries. The Cubs are already being linked to multiple pitchers in trade rumors given all of the injuries. On Thursday, they took a step to address the issue AthleticsPR/status/2052508854722633956" rel="noopener">by acquiring right-handed pitcher Tyler Ferguson in a trade with the Athletics. The A’s received cash considerations in return.
Ferguson will not make or break the Cubs’ season, but he will provide valuable depth. The 32-year-old had pitched for the Athletics since 2024. He began his MLB career strong, turning in a 3.68 ERA across 48 outings. In 2025, however, Ferguson pitched to a 4.66 ERA in 56 appearances.
He made only one start in 2026 before getting traded. The deal was announced a day after Ferguson was optioned to Triple-A.
It will be interesting to see if Ferguson ends up receiving an MLB opportunity soon. At the very least, he can be someone the Cubs turn to if the injuries at the big league level continue.
Chicago has performed well despite all of the injury concerns, however. The Cubs defeated the Cincinnati Reds by a final score of 8-3 on Thursday. They are now 9-1 over their past 10 games overall. Additionally, the Cubs are now 26-12, which is tied for the best record in MLB. The Cubs also hold a four-game lead in the National League Central standings.
Chicago will look to continue playing at a high level on Friday night against the Rangers in Texas at 8:05 PM EST.
