The Cubs have been one of the most active teams in the mix for Arizona Diamondbacks' third baseman Eugenio Suarez this season. With the Diamondbacks' recent struggles and the departure of first baseman Josh Naylor, they now look like sellers at the 2025 MLB trade deadline.
But, will the price be too high? Recently, a few factors have complicated a potential Suarez trade. The Diamondbacks' third baseman was hit by a pitch on Monday and left the game. But, he did return to the lineup for Wednesday's contest. The other factor is the Cubs' current third base situation.

Rookie Matt Shaw has not been productive at third base for the Cubs. Despite his consistent defense, he's hitting just .223 on the season, with a .646 OPS and only six home runs and 25 RBI. Shaw also has more than twice as many strikeouts as he does walks.
However, over his last 11 games, the rookie has picked it up. He has a hit in 10 of the 11 games, and has brought his average up 25 points. Shaw also has four of his six home runs over that span, has driven in 10 runs, and has struck out just four times.

"Matt is getting a great opportunity," Cubs manager Craig Counsell said (h/t ESPN.com). "He's doing the best to take advantage of it. ... You should have to earn your spots on teams like this. That's completely fair. It doesn't get easier. You have to earn that. Matt is doing a great job of that."
Shaw's recent success may be giving the Cubs flexibility, or it could be making a decision that much harder. The price for Suarez will be high, and he's a free agent at the end of the season. However, can the Cubs afford to pass on Suarez and trust Shaw to continue this upward trend through the rest of the season?
One thing to consider is the Cubs working on a multi-player trade with the Diamondbacks. If Chicago can get Suarez and either Gallen or Kelly in a package, the Cubs would be willing to give up more, and the two teams may come to an agreement.
Regardless of the outcome, the next 24-plus hours should be entertaining as the 2025 MLB trade deadline approaches.
