Cubs Boss Shockingly Hints Team Done Adding Players
Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

Since the start of the offseason, the Chicago Cubs were viewed as a team who could make some of the biggest splashes throughout the winter.

Their ownership group and front office alluded to the fact they were going to be aggressive and build a contending roster.

That has not happened so far.

Sure, the Cubs have brought in players that will help them compete for a playoff spot and provide depth to their lineup and pitching staff, but it has not been the star-studded affair that many predicted.

Chicago could change that fact if they were able to land someone like Cody Bellinger, Matt Chapman, Jordan Montgomery, or even Blake Snell.

However, it doesn't seem like that's going to be the case.

President of baseball operations, Jed Hoyer, hinted there might not be more additions coming for the Cubs during his opening Spring Training press conference.

Brett Taylor of Bleacher Nation summarized what Hoyer said on this front and wrote, "What inning is it in the offseason? The closer is certainly warming up, says Jed. Still in contact with free agents, may add more, but at this point we're focusing on the guys who are here."

If that's truly the case, this is a concerning development.

Without Bellinger, the offense has taken a step back on paper. The starting rotation and bullpen have improved, but regression and injuries could make these units thin once again.

Of course, Hoyer could just be giving lip service to the media as he and his front office continue working on deals to land additional pieces.

He mentioned again they are "talking to tons of free agents right now" when asked about Bellinger and his free agency.

But Hoyer doesn't seem that motivated to add additional players based on his comments.

"We've made some good additions, we also want to see the young players step forward, and the hope is that we look back a year from now and even more guys have established themselves. I'm excited where things are right now," he said.

Sure, developing players is a great strategy for the long term, but it's a far cry from what was mentioned after the season ended as they missed the playoffs for the third-straight year.

This was supposed to be a Chicago organization fed up with losing and who was going to assemble a stacked roster filled with star players.

As of now, it looks like they're content with going into the year with the roster as is, hoping they sneak into the postseason.
