Cubs-Cardinals London Series canceled due to COVID-19

The coronavirus has postponed or canceled plenty of events around the sports world, and now the Chicago Cubs-St. Louis Cardinals London Series has been canceled, according to MLB Communications.

The teams were set to play two games at West Ham's London Stadium on June 13 and 14.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred made the announcement on Wednesday in a release sent to MLB employees.

"We made the decision because it was unlikely the events would go forward, and timely cancellation allowed us to preserve important financial resources," Manfred wrote, according to ESPN. "We also have canceled agreements with service providers and delayed projects that involve large capital expenditures."

This would have been the second time games were played in England. The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox competed in London last season, with the Bronx Bombers sweeping the Sox.

The MLB already canceled the San Diego Padres-Arizona Diamondbacks series in Mexico City and the New York Mets-Miami Marlins series in San Juan due to COVID-19, so it's no surprise the 2020 London Series has been canceled as well.
