The Chicago Cubs are off today, and that could not have come at a better time.

After a grueling June that saw them finish 13-13 and lose several close games late, the team finally gets a moment to breathe. The off day offers more than just physical rest; it is a chance to mentally reset before one of the most critical homestands of the season so far.

Chicago opens a six-game set at Wrigley this week, starting with the AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians and then diving straight into a rivalry showdown with the surging St. Louis Cardinals. Both series carry weight, but the weekend set with St. Louis could shape how they end the first half.

With the NL Central standings tight, the Brewers white hot, and no team pulling away, the Cubs need to take advantage of their home field and set the tone for a dominant July.

Bullpen Breather Comes at the Right Time

Perhaps no group on the roster needed a break more than the bullpen. After a stellar June and being leaned on heavily, the Cubs’ relief could use a much-deserved break. The off day allows arms to recover, roles to recalibrate, and manager Craig Counsell to approach this next stretch with a fresh slate.

With a taxed bullpen and several close losses piling up, games started to feel heavier. Even for a team known for staying even-keeled, a full day away from the ballpark brings real value. It is not just about getting off your feet; it is about clearing your head before two opponents that play sharp, high-effort baseball come into your park.

July is the Opportunity

The Cubs entered June with momentum but exited it treading water. Going 13-13 in the month kept them in the race, but did little to build confidence or a cushion. Now July arrives, offering an opportunity to separate, gain ground, and finally string together consistency.

To do that, they will need to play cleaner baseball, have better execution late in games, and more production from the lineup’s core. Even so, they need to enter this stretch feeling ready, both physically and mentally.

This much-needed off day gives them that chance.
