The Chicago Cubs are one of the top teams in the National League to this point in the 2025 MLB season. On the outside looking in, they look like a team that could be a World Series contender.
Jed Hoyer and company have put together a talented roster. However, there are still questions that need to be answered.
One of those questions has to do with whether or not the Cubs' starting rotation is good enough to win come postseason time. To that end, Chicago could look to be aggressive ahead of the MLB trade deadline.
Who could they consider trying to target? One name has been mentioned as a potential option.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic has suggested that Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen could be a possible target for the Cubs.
"The Cubs could use one more starting pitcher and Gallen would be the perfect target even though he’s having a down year (4-8 with a 5.15 ERA)," Bowden wrote.
"Two years ago, he was the starting pitcher for the NL All-Star team and finished third in the Cy Young Award voting. Last year, he went 14-6 with a 3.65 ERA. Gallen would need to have three to four strong starts before the deadline for the Diamondbacks to get the strong prospect package they’d want, but if they fall further out of contention, they might have to trade the impending free agent. He needs to improve the command and late finish on his fastball to get back to where he needs to be."
Gallen would be a very intriguing target for Chicago. As Bowden mentioned, he has had a down season, but the upside of acquiring him would be huge.
Throughout the 2025 season thus far with the Diamondbacks, Gallen has made 15 starts. He has compiled a 4-8 record to go along with a 5.19 ERA, a 1.35 WHIP, a 2.0 K/BB ratio, and 86.2 innings pitched.
If Gallen could return to the form that he had a couple of years back, the Cubs could improve their championship chances by trading for him.
