Cubs Could Add Pete Crow-Armstrong Insurance, Per Chicago Insider

If past indications have shown anything, the Chicago Cubs could look to make a few depth moves during the trade deadline.

It's all but sure that Chicago will add to its rotation, as it's obvious the team needs to do so, but there are also other ways for the Cubs to improve.

When searching for what that could mean, The Athletic recently noted that the Cubs could be interested in adding another center fielder. They wrote that when Jed Hoyer worked in the front office with Theo Epstein, the Cubs made a few moves to acquire center fielders when they could contend.

“The track record shows the Cubs typically add an extra center fielder during a playoff race. While current president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer worked as Theo Epstein’s general manager in Chicago, the Cubs made midseason moves to acquire Austin Jackson (2015), Leonys Martin (2017) and Cameron Maybin (2020) for depth and experience,” The Athletic wrote.

When later speaking about the injury to Pete Crow-Armstrong, The Athletic reported that the Cubs are already exploring the market for potential upgrades. While there's no way to replace him given his play throughout the year, they could be interested in an insurance policy to ensure his health moving forward.

“Chicago is already exploring the trade market for potential upgrades that could include a starting pitcher, a late-inning reliever and a third baseman. There is no way to completely replace Crow-Armstrong’s energy and production — and this could wind up being only a short-term issue — but the club would be interested in another insurance policy.”

Crow-Armstrong was out of the lineup on Monday night due to a right knee injury.
