Once again, the Chicago Cubs scored first in Game 2 of the National League Division Series against the Milwaukee Brewers, but still ended up losing the contest, 7-3.
Chicago also scored the first run in Game 1, but ultimately could not keep up with the Brewers’ firepower.
The Cubs felt good about their chances early in Game 2 when Seiya Suzuki unleashed a three-run home run against Milwaukee starter Aaron Ashby, but the Brewers did not give up a run the rest of the way.
Once Ashby stepped off the mound, the Cubs’ offense went lifeless. They were not able to put a run on the board after the first inning, while the Brewers managed to score three more runs as insurance after a historic first inning by both teams’ offenses.
Chicago manager Craig Counsell could only do so much from the dugout as he watched the Cubs’ bats flounder, but he is not losing hope.
“We’ve got to find a way to just create more pressure, and that’s baserunners, hits, walks,” Counsell said, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). “We’ve got to have more pressure and make innings and kind of pitching decisions much tougher on the other side.”
The Cubs will look to keep their season alive and trim Milwaukee’s series lead in half, as they take their turn to host this NLDS matchup in Game 3 on Wednesday at Wrigley Field.
