In recent years, Chicago Cubs fans have become accustomed to see the team mentioned in blockbuster move rumors and come up short of getting deals done.
Time and time again, the Cubs seem to be involved in bidding wars for top-tier players. However, they simply never seem to come out on top in those bidding wars.
Jed Hoyer and the front office have opted not to pursue aggressive moves for big money. While there are some aspects of that to like, Chicago almost operates like a small market team. That has led to the Cubs coming up short of World Series contention year in and year out.
Fans have grown extremely frustrated by the small market mentality that the franchise has had of late.
Heading into this offseason, there was hope that Chicago could swing big. So far, the Cubs have been in the running for players like Dylan Cease and Tatsuya Imai, but have come up short in both races. That has left fans wondering whether or not the team will make an impact move this offseason.
While Chicago remains in contention to sign players like Alex Bregman, Cody Bellinger, and are still a team to watch for a starting pitching move, two MLB insiders have cautioned fans of getting optimistic about the chances of that happening.
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon advised fans to “bet the under” on the Cubs making a high-impact move for those players.
Needless to say, that just gives fans more reason for frustration. If Chicago exits the offseason by losing Kyle Tucker and doing nothing offensively to replace him, there will be a lot of criticism hurled at Hoyer and the front office.
At this point in time, the Cubs do not appear to have the makeup of a World Series caliber team. In order to become that kind of a team, signing a player like Bregman, Tucker, or Bellinger will be necessary.
Unfortunately, there are major reasons to doubt that Chicago has any intent of spending that kind of money.
