The Chicago Cubs are looking to bolster their roster at the 2025 MLB trade deadline. While starting pitcher is the most obvious need, the team is also exploring adding an upgrade over Matt Shaw at third base.
MLB insider Jon Heyman reports that the Cubs, among other teams, have inquired with the Arizona Diamondbacks for third baseman Eugenio Suarez.
Yankees, Mariners and Cubs are among teams to inquire on Eugenio Suarez, whose 36 HR leads the NL (and is tied with Judge, 2 behind Raleigh)

Suarez has been on fire since the All-Star break, where he earned his second All-Star nod. In the four games since returning from his second All-Star break, Suarez has hit five home runs.
This recent stretch elevated Suarez to the NL leader in home runs with 36, and the MLB leader in RBIs with 86. He also has 93 hits, 64 runs scored, 18 doubles, and has a .933 OPS more than halfway through the year.
His offensive production has been among the best in the league, and there's no shortage of teams who are interested in Suarez. The New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners are just two of the many teams who've inquired about Suarez.
The Cubs will have a tough time landing Suarez, but his offensive prowess could make the Cubs' offense even better, despite being third in team OPS coming out of the All-Star break.
Suarez is set to hit free agency after the season, a huge reason why the Diamondbacks would consider trading a player who's hitting so well. They could get a huge return for a rental, as Suarez is the top bat available at the deadline.
Bringing in the 34-year-old slugger would be a huge move for the Cubs. He'd replace Shaw, who struggled leading up to the All-Star break. While Shaw's been better coming out of the break, an upgrade is still on the table.
Heyman's report that the Cubs have inquired with the Diamondbacks about Suarez is a good sign. It'd be a big investment, but Suarez has been one of the best hitters this season. He's worth it.
