The Chicago Cubs need some reinforcements as soon as possible. At 51-35, they’ve played well, but the Cubs have been a below-average team over the past month, which is somewhat concerning.
The Milwaukee Brewers are only 3.0 games behind them, which should be a telling sign of what they need to do ahead of the deadline.
However, which might not come as much of a surprise, Jed Hoyer admitted that the team is interested in adding players, but that it might have to wait until the end of July.
Teams likely don't want to move on from any of their top players right now, as other squads will be interested in sending better packages right before the July 31 deadline.
"We've had a lot of conversations with teams," Hoyer said, per ESPN. "These things ramp up, they take a little break at draft time, then they ramp up again after that. When it comes to acquiring depth, we're on the lookout. We're talking, but with the realization these things trend towards late July."
It remains uncertain what exactly the Cubs are looking for at the trade deadline, but they should be looking for a starter. There have been reports indicating that the Cubs are interested in adding an arm, but there are other areas where they need to improve.
If the Cubs can walk out of the deadline with a starter, a decent bat, and perhaps another piece, fans should be content.
The season could be a special one if Hoyer does what he needs to do, so hopefully, he gets to work.
