Cubs' Jose Quintana back on injured list after two appearances

The Chicago Cubs activated left-handed pitcher Jose Quintana off the injured list for the first time during the pandemic-shortened season in the last week of August.

The 31-year-old wasn't available for long.

The Cubs confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that Quintana returned to the injured list retroactive to Monday due to left lat inflammation. Right-hander Jason Adam was recalled from the club's alternate training site in a corresponding move.

Before the start of Chicago's July summer camp training sessions, Quintana underwent surgery to repair a thumb injury on his throwing hand after he accidentally suffered a cut while washing dishes. Chicago's initial plan was to ease him back via bullpen work, and he tossed three innings against the Detroit Tigers on Aug. 25 and three more versus the Cincinnati Reds on Aug. 31.

Quintana allowed four earned runs and struck nine batters out over those six innings.
