This off-season the Chicago Cubs acquired Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros. With just one year left before being eligible to become a free agent for the first time in his career, all eyes have been on whether the Cubs will lock him down long-term. Until now, extension talks had been quiet, but that is starting to change following the announcement of the Blue Jays deal with Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

Cubs front office is judging the market

Following Guerrero Jr’s extension, Cubs GM Carter Hawkins joined 670 The Score‘s “Mully & Hugh Show,” and essentially said that they are trying to gauge whether exploring a Tucker extension right now would make sense. Hawkins said, “You’re trying to understand, are there certain positions, certain players that are overvalued or undervalued, and allocate your dollars appropriately within those contexts, but it’s hard to judge markets.”

“So yeah, I mean, those are conversations that we’re constantly having during the offseason, and during the season, trying to understand where there might be some inefficiencies. And we’re just trying to make sure that when we’re spending money, that that money is going towards wins, and that money is going towards wins in an efficient fashion.

Kyle Tucker is just here to play ball

From Tucker’s perspective, he kept things low-key when asked by the media about a potential contract extension, simply saying, “I don’t know. I’m just here to play some baseball and see what happens after that.” Right now, he is letting his performance do the talking as he is off to a blistering .322/.452/.678 start that includes five home runs, 16 RBI, and three stolen bases.

One MLB Insider has suggested that Chicago Cubs and Kyle Tucker are discussing a possible contract extension

According to Mike Rodriguez, a MLB Insider who was all over the Guerrero Jr extension before the big names like Jeff Passan, the Cubs and Tucker are having contract extension discussions.  Rodriguez did not reveal how serious these talks are. It is possible that each side could be gauging the market to see if continuing discussions right now is advantageous or not.

It will be interesting to see if this rumor from Rodriguez develops into anything further or not. Jed Hoyer has previously expressed that Tucker is the type of player he would want to build a team around and Tucker has indicated that his time with Chicago so far has been great, so hopefully the two sides can find a common ground and agree to a long term commitment.
