There are a few ways the Chicago Cubs front office should look at Kyle Tucker's potential deal.
For one, why trade the package they did if they didn't plan on keeping him? On top of that, if the Cubs plan to give Tucker the money he's looking for, there’s no excuse for them not to give the rest of the roster a major boost in the offseason.
Spending that type of money on one player doesn't make any sense if they don't want to improve the remainder of the roster.
But some believe that Tucker's new contract could be egregious, including Jim Bowden of The Athletic, who recently noted that it's going to be “excessive.” He didn't say exactly what it might be, but he believes that the number could start with a six in front of it.
“It's going to get excessive, so if you don't want to do excessive, you're probably not going to get him,” said Bowden. “I’ve said this before and I’ll stand by it; he’s going to get a 6 in front of his number.”
“Great defender, great arm. They are just few and far between,” said Bowden. “When you’re in your 20s like he is, he’s going to age well, you can feel comfortable giving him a 10 to 12-year contract. He’s a complete player; there’s nothing he can’t do.”
There's a major difference between $500 and $600 million.
However, if that's what the Cubs have to do to keep Tucker around, there's a very strong argument to be made that they should. Of course, there are downsides to any type of big deal, but he's well worth the money compared to what others have gotten around the league.
