The Chicago Cubs have their guy at the top of the rotation for the foreseeable future. On Wednesday evening, free-agent starting pitcher Marcus Stroman announced via Twitter that he is heading to Chicago.

The Cubs and Stroman had been in ‘hot and heavy’ talks all day. The Cubs got their guy before the current CBA expires at 10:59 PM CST.

This is the first notable free-agent signing for Jed Hoyer and company. It tells Cubs fans the front office and ownership are serious about competing in 2022. According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the pact is a three-year, $71 million deal with an opt-out after the second year. Here’s a breakdown of Stroman’s yearly earnings:

Stroman surely seems excited to put on the blue and white pinstripes for the foreseeable future.

Across seven MLB seasons between the Blue Jays and Mets, Marcus Stroman owns a 61-60 record, 3.63 ERA, and 7.5 K/9 rate in 1,028.1 innings. Most recently, He pitched to a 10-13 record and 3.02 ERA in 179 innings across 33 starts for the Mets in 2021.
