Ahead of Wednesday’s matchup with the San Diego Padres, the Chicago Cubs placed infielder Nick Madrigal on the 10-day IL with a left groin strain. The move was retroactive to June 12.

-Caleb Kilian recalled from Triple-A Iowa.
-Nick Madrigal placed on the 10-day IL with a left groin strain. Retro to 6/12.
As a result, Caleb Kilian was recalled and started on Wednesday night. Kilian’s outing wasn’t the greatest, but the prospect continues to show promise toward a big-league future.
However, for Madrigal, 2022 has been a forgettable season. The 25-year-old is slashing a pedestrian .222/.263/.250 with three doubles and two RBI. In fact, Madrigal’s presence hasn’t been missed when he’s out of the lineup. This is the second baseman’s second trip to the IL after spending time there due to lower back tightness earlier this season. With the future in mind, it’s unclear what Madrigal’s role will be within the Cubs’ organization after being a major piece in the Craig Kimbrel trade last season.
The Cubs’ ugly losing streak continued on Wednesday. Looking to avoid a second straight sweep, the Cubs and Padres do battle at 1:20 p.m. CDT on Thursday at Wrigley Field. Matt Swarmer takes the hill for the Cubs against the red-hot Joe Musgrove for San Diego.
