Cubs Make Pitching Decision for Marlins Game

Assad’s return comes after he made his most recent minor league appearance for Iowa on Aug. 30, throwing 5.1 innings of one-run ball. His ability to work both as a starter and reliever has made him a valuable piece for Counsell throughout the season.

The 29-year-old has appeared in 22 games for Chicago, including 10 starts, and has provided steady production whenever the Cubs have needed additional rotation depth. 

Assad will face Miami right-hander Ryan Gusto, who enters the matchup with a 1-3 record, 3.86 ERA and 57 strikeouts. MLB’s official probable pitchers list confirms the matchup for Saturday afternoon at loanDepot park. 

The timing is significant for Chicago after Friday’s 6-1 victory over the Marlins moved the Cubs to 80-62 and into sole possession of the NL’s top Wild Card spot. 

With the postseason race tightening, Assad’s return gives Counsell another reliable option while allowing the Cubs to manage their pitching staff carefully down the stretch. His performance Saturday could also influence how Chicago handles its rotation for the remainder of September.
